The Wheatsheaf Works in Knighton Fields, once the world’s most up to date boot and shoe factory, is transformed into new housing by the developer Urban Rhythm.
Brand new townhouses now stand in the shadow of the Grade II buildings and the £20 million project will also see the renovation of the former factory into high quality new homes.
Designed by architects Stephen George & Partners Wheatsheaf Works’ first phase of 31 homes are generous in size, with the design driven by practical family living. In total 172 homes will be created.
Built in 1891 in Knighton Fields, Wheatsheaf Works was the Co-operative Wholesale Society-owned boot and shoe factory - the world’s largest and most up-to-date of its kind when it first opened its doors.
Juxtaposing new build homes with the Grade II listed factory buildings at Wheatsheaf Works creates a strong visual impact.
The new homes are built well above current energy efficiency standards. Heating to all houses is provided by air source heat pumps, with underfloor heating installed to the ground floor of each home, vastly reducing the carbon footprint of the dwellings and helping to reduce occupier bills.
A new landmark building for Leicester, The Summit’s tower and adjacent blocks contain 369 rooms of student accommodation – all of which were snapped up.
Leighfield Park is the £3.9 million first phase of Oakham Heights, a major urban expansion of the Rutland town of Oakham.
