The first large Build to Rent apartment block in the East Midlands to open its doors, The Wullcomb is in Leicester city centre where it faces the Highcross shopping centre.
The Wullcomb is 12 storeys at its highest point and includes 297 apartments plus four retail units and 125 car parking spaces.
Derelict for several years, the site has seen the construction of four new buildings housing studios and one and two bedroomed apartments. Shared spaces include a library, post room and rooftop terrace.
The Wullcomb’s site on Vaughan Way is a link between Highcross and the city’s current and future waterside developments. To respect the adjacent listed All Saints Church, the accommodation blocks cascade down in height until a green buffer.
The stepping down also occurs to Elbow Lane, to minimise impact on nearby residential properties.
An important fourth century Roman mosaic was discovered during ground preparation. Discovered by University of Leicester archaeologists, the mosaic was removed and is now on display at the Jewry Wall Museum.
