The £1m Makers Yard offers ten inspirational workspaces for people who make things, from furniture designers to textile artists, in the heart of Leicester’s city centre’s cultural quarter.

The former Grade II Listed hosiery buildings on Rutland Street are thought to be the first of their kind in Leicester, and the oldest surviving in the region.

Makers Yard is nurturing creative economic activity in the city within a sensitively regenerated historic Leicester landmark.

Further Information

Makers Yard was developed to continue the regeneration of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter.

The rationale was to contribute to economic growth in the city by stimulating, supporting and sustaining creative businesses.

The sensitive regeneration of a historic city landmark is benefiting the creative industries, local businesses and the wider community by providing facilities for artists, designers and makers to develop existing or start-up businesses.

Designed by Maber and built by Morgan Sindall, the Leicester City Council project was 70 per cent let within its first month.

The development of Makers Yard has increased confidence in the Cultural Quarter. Discussions are underway with local developers and Council officers to develop other local buildings in the same way. The neighbouring plot of land has been earmarked for a ‘Makers Yard 2’.
