About the Sustainable Development of the Year Award 2013

An Award given to the developer/owner/designer of a scheme that the judging panel, including experts in the field, considered to be the best new environmentally sustainable development in Leicestershire or Rutland that was completed within the 18 months prior to 31st July 2013 and has not been previously submitted for a ProCon Award.

2013 Award Finalist

Built by Rugby contractor Stepnell and developer MRP, the £5.26m Hinckley Hub on the town’s Rugby Road achieved an BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating for its energy use and environmental impact.

2013 Award Finalist

Low energy use, low capital cost and low maintenance costs were designed into the new 10,250 square foot office building for Charles Street Buildings (Leicester) Limited at its Thurmaston Industrial Estate at Melton Road.

Pear Tree Office Park, Ratby

2013 Award Winner

Fuelled by a biomass boiler burning woodchips from willow grown less than a kilometre away, the three office and light industrial units at Pear Tree Office Park are divided into nine units.

Award Criteria

The applications were judged by a panel of expert judges and a shortlist selected. The shortlisted applicants were visited by the panel of judges on Tuesday 10th September in order to select three finalists.

The winner of the Sustainable Development of the Year Award was decided by the panel of expert judges.

The development was judged on the following criteria:

  • Efficient Use and Conservation of Resources – including energy, CO2, water, timber, other materials
  • Voluntary Adoption of Recognised Advanced Standards – such as BREEAM, Passivhaus and Code for Sustainable Homes, Considerate Constructors and Forestry Certification Scheme
  • Biodiversity – natural landscape and species conservation and enhancement measures
  • Contribution to a sustainable local community and community well-being – including both physical building measures and the quality and diversity of services enabled by the building
  • Overall sustainability – a discretionary evaluation based upon overall social, economic and environmental achievements in the round, or exceptional or innovative effort, especially on limited budgets.
