The expansion and refurbishment of Leicestershire’s independent cinema and art centre has enabled the growth of Phoenix’s cultural, social and economic impact.
The project has also marked a step-change in financial resilience, with attendances now 36 per cent above 2022 levels.
The expansion significantly redeveloped existing internal spaces and a large extension created an additional 1,114 sqm of internal space and an external roof-top terrace of 435 sqm.
Through a glazed façade onto Midland Street and a planted roof-top terrace seating area, the building exterior draws people in from the outside with a welcoming visual impression of the internal spaces and the activity within.
Two additional 63-seater cinema screens were added to the original 220 and 120 seater auditoria, enabling a wider range of films and events. A new, much larger and more prominent digital art gallery provides two exhibition spaces. The extended café bar has almost doubled the seating capacity available.
The project was funded by Arts Council England, Leicester City Council, Garfield Weston Foundation, Foyle Foundation and the European Regional Development Fund, alongside a successful donations programme.
