Medium to Large Non-Residential Scheme of the Year Award 2024 Finalist

A new modular ward was created at Glenfield Hospital to help meet the University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust’s requirement for extra capacity.

An off-site, light gauge steel frame solution was used, enabling the modules to be constructed under factory controlled conditions and craned into location with minimal disruption.

The aim was a design that was functional and cost effective yet considered aesthetics, to sit harmoniously within the surrounding estate at Glenfield. It is purely electric and has solar panels and heat pumps.

Further Information

Due to the site being a live hospital, there were challenges such as noise and delivery time constraints. Deliveries had to be before 7am or late at night to avoid busy pedestrian hours. All the modules for the 18-bed ward were delivered over two weekends.

Noise had to be minimised to avoid disruption to patients and staff, particularly as an existing ward directly backed onto the new works. The site was directly on the ambulance main blue light run so careful management was needed during construction.

Modules can be disassembled with ease and reused or where required repurposed for a different use. The new single storey respiratory ward is connected to the existing Ward 15 by a link corridor.
