Grade II Listed timber framed barns at the former Limes Farm have been converted into a dream home by a self-builder couple.
The redundant barns had become surrounded by other residential properties in the village. Part of the challenge was to achieve the best outcome for a heritage asset by retaining as much of the historic fabric as possible.
Part of a barn directly abuts the footpath on the main road running through the village. This part is a good example of a historic timber framed barn so retaining this ensured the historic fabric was maintained for future generations.
The project sought to ensure the visual impact on the village and its conservation area was improved. Internally, visual impact was equally important so key features of the historic fabric are visible and can be appreciated.
The scheme is an example of how a traditional building and contemporary technologies can work well together. The buildings’ historic roots are still evident in places and the project achieved modern thermal efficiency to rival most new build dwellings.
It incorporates green technologies for heating and lighting in a village not supplied by mains gas, achieving a very low running cost.
