The new 10,250 square foot office building for Charles Street Buildings (Leicester) Limited is part of the company’s re-development of its Thurmaston Industrial Estate at Melton Road.
The three storey building occupies a prominent position as a gate house to the estate. The company has been based in Thurmaston since 1954.
Designed by Leicester architect Stephen George & Partners, the design uses local materials including natural Charnwood granite constructed in the way commonly seen in the Charnwood Forest area.
The plan of the new HQ for Charles Street Buildings is based on a square with a centrally placed staircase that provides access to each floor.
The glass lift is placed in the very centre of the building. This arrangement maximises the opportunity to use the outside walls for windows to provide ventilation and natural light.
The ground floor uses include garaging for cars, storage, shower and changing rooms and gym. The two upper floors have offices, boardroom and reception areas with a central circulation area naturally lit from a roof ‘lantern’. The glazed lift within a glazed lift shaft allows maximum light and visibility across the circulation areas.
On the second floor the executive offices are on each corner and have large ‘picture’ windows and access to an open-air deck with a glass balustrade, which overlooks the adjacent landscaped areas.
Believed to be the only four-storey shopping arcade of its type in the country, Silver Arcade has been given a new lease of life with a £2.9m modernisation after bring disused for years.
Patients of Loughborough’s Charnwood Medical Group now see their doctors and nurses in a converted and extended former Victoria school.
