Regeneration Project of the Year Award 2013 Finalist

A new development of high quality student accommodation on Western Road, Code was designed to be a new addition to the city's contemporary architecture as well as conserving part of Leicester’s industrial heritage.

Code incorporates the former home of footwear manufacturer Equity Shoes, one of the first co-operative manufacturing businesses in England. Code’s first phase encompassed 250 of the 600 beds planned for the full scheme.

Further Information

The Equity building is a fine example of a Victorian factory, one the developer was keen to see incorporated into the new development, so preserving part of Leicester’s industrial history.

Architect rg+p, Hallam Contracts, MDA Consulting and engineer PRP Consulting created a scheme that fills the gap left by previous developments, using industrial land that has suffered from lack of investment, and is a positive visual backdrop to Bede Park and the canal.

The high quality development has helped to free up existing local housing stock. Once fully complete more than 600 student bed spaces will be a high quality alternative to private landlord housing. This will help rebalance the area, creating capacity for local families to move back into an area previously defined by a very high level of student occupation.
