The comprehensive upgrade, alteration and extension of an existing house has created a high quality, contemporary family home.
The owners purchased the large but uninspiring Edwardian house with later rear extensions and asked Architects LE1 to design its transformation into a spacious and stylish home.
The brief was to create a spacious, contemporary home with a dramatic entrance hall, five bedrooms (three with en-suite bathrooms), open plan kitchen/dining/living spaces, a double garage/workshop and a family cinema.
The whole existing building was reduced to a shell, to facilitate the full replacement of all services and to address the relatively poor thermal performance of the solid brick original house.
The existing floors and walls were insulated and rendered on the outside, and the roof was re-slated incorporating sarking insulation. Sections of the roof were opened up and roof lights add drama to the double-height spaces.
The new exterior uses a limited palette of materials; natural slate for the roof, through-coloured render for the walls on a dry-stone plinth. Windows and fascia cladding are powder coated aluminium and the front door, porch, garage door and horizontal cladding sections are oiled hardwood.
At the rear of the house a full-width extension was added, incorporating cornerless, bi-folding doors to the patio and garden.
Believed to be the first fully solar powered new-build home in the UK, the Solar House is zero carbon with heating, hot water and lighting all sourced from the sun.
