About us

With almost 160 years of family-owned heritage, Stepnell is a highly experienced complete construction partner, delivering maximum project quality and value for clients, while remaining a family business at heart.

We understand the unique drivers and challenges at work across a diverse range of sectors. This understanding fuels our mission to seamlessly provide complete end-to-end project services across design, build, project management, energy management and land / asset developments.

The Stepnell Group is a well-capitalised and financially resilient business, operating from seven offices in the East Midlands, Midlands and Southern England and the North West. Projects

Leicester College Engineering and Technology Campus

Redevelopment – Education

The redevelopment of the facility on the Abbey Park Campus to provide students with updated learning facilities to support the delivery of engineering T levels and other types of engineering qualifications.

Stepnell’s work on the 1,600m2 project includes the introduction of and upgrade to new industry standard computerised laboratories. These will be used to teach students across specialist engineering disciplines, including electrical engineering, electronic engineering, pneumatic and hydraulics, programmable logic controllers (PLC) and robotics.

A new mechanical engineering workshop is also being constructed by Stepnell to accommodate world-class equipment. A specialist hand skills development and projects area, welding booths and a state-of-the-art grinding room are being integrated to enhance the hands-on learning student experience.

Overdale School, Leicester

Refurb – Education

Demolition of an existing redundant swimming pool and construction of a new junior and infant school facilities.

Stepnell were appointed through the Procure Partnerships Framework to deliver the expansion of school premises in six different areas of the school grounds, creating an additional 240 pupil places and bringing the facilities up to current standards.

Part of the OAK Multi Academy Trust, the Junior and Infants Schools share the same campus, accommodating approximately 900 pupils from pre-school up to Year 6.
The project involved works to increase and improve facilities at both schools.

Demolition and backfill of an existing redundant swimming pool and associated outbuildings was followed by construction of a new Junior School classroom block comprising studio, offices, WCs, storage and plant room.

The Infant School building was extended providing classrooms and withdrawal space plus the reconfiguration of existing WCs.

The existing main halls of both the Infants and the Juniors were extended to provide additional storage facilities.

The school remained open throughout. Logistics and delivery methodology maintained safe access for staff, pupils and parents and minimised disruption to day-to-day operations and key events such as SATS tests.

Badger sett relocation and protection measures were implemented in line with ecological requirements.

As part of Stepnell’s project social value commitments, over 200 hours of staff volunteering and £1,100 of materials were donated to create a memorial garden with the school grounds.

“I have been overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity in your time and resources in the development of the garden. It looks amazing and I will be forever grateful to you for creating something that our community can enjoy.” Head teacher at Overdale School

Elmbrook School, Leicester

Refurb - Education

Refurbishment of a vacant former special educational needs (SEN) school building to consolidate the existing pupil referral unit (PRU) in Leicester city centre.

The client’s brief was to refurbish the former Nether Hall special school site (which previously served children and adults with significant learning and physical difficulties) to provide a Primary Pupil Referral Unit to accommodate 40 pupils.

The existing school, constructed circa 1970s, was a purpose-built building with single and two storey spaces. It has been altered and extended over its lifetime and, prior to Stepnell’s appointment, had stood vacant for the five years.

In order to accommodate the PRU’s specialist requirements, complex remodelling of the internal accommodation was required together with essential condition improvement works to bring the building back into use.

Stepnell worked closely with the client and consultant team to deliver the programme of works, providing flexible teaching and learning space for staff and primary school pupils at Key Stage 1 & 2.
